SENATOR ROBACH ANNOUNCES INCREASED RTS RIDERSHIP

As a result of Senator Joe Robach’s effort to secure funding, the price to ride a Regional Transit Service, Inc. (RTS) bus fell to just $1.00 on September 1, 2008, a price last seen in 1991. Ridership at RTS increased 23% compared to this time last year.  Customers in Rochester are responding to the recent cut in fares by getting around town on the bus.

“More and more Rochesterians have been enticed by the recent fare cut and are finding that our buses provide a timely, safe and environmentally-friendly alternative means of transportation,” said RGRTA CEO Mark Aesch. “Rather than drive alone in your own vehicle, just hop on a RTS bus to go to work, visit with family and friends, or run errands. It’s a great way to make a difference that’s good for your bottom line.”

“I was thrilled to learn of the recent increase in ridership.  RTS is a superb way to travel and helps families save on the rising costs of gas.  I applaud the people of RTS, from its leadership to the dedicated drivers, for making this tremendous fare transition possible which has been such an asset to our community,” said Senator Robach.

“Senator Robach is a champion of public transportation throughout the Rochester region and his continued commitment of continually investing critical state resources has allowed us to reinvest into the community and most recently lower the fare for 50,000 customers a day,” said Aesch.

Given the stresses on household budgets, residents in Rochester are finding an alternate way to travel – by bus. Compared to September last year, nearly 280,000 more people rode RTS buses in September of this year to get to work, shopping and doctors appointments.
